Iron Deficiency a common occurrence

Iron Deficiency- leading to Iron deficiency anaemia, is unbelievably common.

I see so many people with low iron or ferritin, some even having iron infusions and it still is low, while others the infusion lasts 12 months or so, then depletes again. Why is this common place? Well for women who are still menstruating, you are losing iron every month, and maybe not restoring enough.

Are you eating good quality grass fed meats, and plenty of greens? Do you have sufficient enzymes to breakdown foods? Is your gut health in tip-top shape? Do you have parasites?

It can also be gene related, but back to basics. Did you know that phytates (phytic acid) in wheat and related grains, bind to Iron and other positively charged minerals such as magnesium, zinc and calcium and then you poop them out. If you have a sandwich or roll with roast beef, most of the iron content from that meal will be bound by the phytates and will not be absorbed. Even a nice roast pork, if you have other grains with the meal, most of the Iron is lost. Its an issue that is so common, and the easy solution is to eliminate eating the wheat and grains.

For some this may seem scary, but it is so easy to consume other things. Phytates have been enriched in common wheat, as the agriculture deems the need to upgrade the resistance to insects, moulds and fungal infections. Over the years farmers and agriculturists have chosen wheat strains, which are inadvertently higher in phytates, as they are more resistant to pests, and therefore higher in the ability to deplete your iron.

Unfortunately, even the more ancient grains like Khorasan (kamut) which contains gluten, may still bind your iron. Plenty of ancient grains are also gluten-free, such as quinoa, millet, fonio, sorghum, amaranth, and teff. These are suitable for people who cannot tolerate gluten or wheat. If you have been suffering with low iron or ferritin and struggle to keep your levels high enough to NOT feel fatigued, dizzy, pins and needles in your fingers, heart palpitations, dry and damaged hair and skin, swelling and soreness of the tongue and mouth, restless legs- then maybe elimination of wheat and grains while on a good supplement regime will be the answer.
